Syrian security forces extended their crackdown on the restive city of Hama on Tuesday in what is fast becoming a crucial test for the regime of president Bashar al-Assad's handling of nationwide protests.
Loyalist troops and militias battled to contain the biggest challenge yet to the government's authority, as security forces were accused by Amnesty International of committing war crimes during a clampdown earlier in the months-long uprising.
The report of the alleged abuses comes amid calls by regime critics for the International Criminal Court to pursue members of Mr Assad's government.
Activist Omar Habbal in Hama said troops and pro-regime gangs again entered the city from the west and north, firing on people in the streets who responded by throwing stones and erecting barricades. "Fighting is still going on, there are many injuries," he said by telephone.
